Cultivating Joy Through Gardening

A garden has more to offer than what we harvest.

A garden can be a backyard vegetable patch, but it can also be a houseplant on your windowsill, an apple tree outside your door, or the park you walk through every morning.

Cultivating Joy Through Gardening offers a year's worth of short, uplifting stories and reflections that blend the gentle art of gardening with personal growth and wellness.

Advanced Praise

“Twenty years ago, I met Marion Owen and wondered how someone from Kodiak, Alaska, land of snow and ice, could write about gardening. I learned that a life with plants can bloom anywhere—on an Arctic island or an apartment balcony! This delightful collection of gardening meditations reminds us that a garden is never just a place where things grow—it is a place where lives are changed, hearts are healed, and lessons are learned.

Whether you are an experienced gardener, an occasional planter, or someone who simply appreciates a good story, these meditations will touch your heart. They invite us to slow down and notice the small miracles all around us.

Read these stories slowly. Let them take root. You may discover that, like a garden, life has a way of producing its most beautiful surprises when we least expect them.”

Jim McDaniel - Former White House Liaison for the National Park Service

“Master gardener Marion Owen really cultivates joy with every literary turn of her trowel. Little seeds of hope and wonder flower as the reader turns each page. It's like taking a walk with Marion in her beautiful seaside garden: there's a bee, then a flower, then a bird, then a beautiful reflection as a boat sails by. Marion's easy prose is disarming. With a smile and a story, she shares what she loves about life in the garden: gratitude, whimsy, delight, and a park of the divine.”

Scott McMurren - Anchorage, Alaska Travel Columnist

“Marion's stories invite us to slow down and experience renewal and healing by connecting with the people and the natural world around us.”

Kathy N. - Mental Health Nurse Practitioner

“Laugh and cry! Marion Owen has hit another home run! What an eye for gardening's best stories!”

Jeff Lowenfels - Author of the longest-running garden column in North America

Why I Wrote This Book

Over time, I learned that nurturing plants is about more than making compost, yanking weeds, and picking blueberries (always leave a few for the birds).

Gardens have taught me to pay attention. To be patient. To laugh at myself. To accept disappointment and begin again. And to stop long enough to appreciate what is right in front of me.

Those little revelations—and the people, plants, and stories I've collected along the way—became Cultivating Joy Through Gardening.

My hope is simple: that these two-minute daily stories will help you cultivate a little more gratitude, wonder, resilience, and joy whether your garden is an acre of vegetables or a single pot on the windowsill.
